City estate of A.A. Kazakov – E.D. Dunker

Formerly, there was a large manor owned by one of the branches of princes Khovanskys. The majority of the plot was used as an ancient garden, and few structures faced the line of passable (presently Molchanovsky Pereulok) lane. In the mid-19th century the manor of the Khovanskys shared its destiny with many once large estates within the city: it was divided and sold piece by piece. Ever since estate No. 9 exists within its present boundaries.

Residential facilities of the plot were rented and in 1867 bibliophile Pavel Vasilyevich Schapov moved in, when he just started to collect his library which later formed the basis for collection of Historical Museum and Public Historical Library.

In 1892 the main building underwent a reconstruction. The owner of the house Yelisaveta Dunker extended the building. Based on the design of the famous architect I.S. Kuznetsov, the eastern part with the front anteroom, the staircase and the study was built.

This part was decorated in the spirit of Neo-renaissance: marble staircase was dressed with monumental elements imitating the entrances to Italian palaces, the study obtained a wooden decoration also stylized in line with Italian Renaissance. The order for decorating the ceilings and the walls of staircase premises, as well as the state rooms was awarded to Mikhail Vrubel, however the panels "Judgment of Paris", "Venice" and "Spain" created by him did not catch fancy of the clients. Only three decorative panels with floral motives where used in the mansion.

In 1910 the house along with the plot bought O.S. Zeitlin, a merchant belonging to the top guild, who ordered to architect Adolf Zeligson one of the most beautiful rooms of the building – so called "blue parlor". Zeitlin's son Mikhail – an amateur poet – invited to the mansion famous poets and writers. Pasternak, Antokolsky, Ehrenburg and Inber were frequent guests here.

Historical and cultural landmark of regional significance "City manor of A.A. Kazakov – E.D. Dunker, 18 - 20th centuries.
