Entrepreneur I. Mindovsky, the owner of the luxurious mansion at 44 Povarskaya Street, was an incredibly miserly person. Ferrying his cargoes along the Volga River, he got himself a free passage on steamships and saved on everything - he took only hot water served for free at a steamship lunch counter and always had a small haversack with him.
Once memoirist Varentsov and his friend Konovalov were sailing on a boat and decided to have lunch together, but then they ran into Mindovsky and offered him to join them. “What are you saying! I am full, I have just had my lunch, do not dine twice in a row, you will fall ill!” replied Mindovsky, laughing. “You have your lunch, I will come and have only a cup of tea,” and so he left.
However, the men ordered lunch for three people. By the time it was served, Mindovsky came along with his haversack. Konovalov invited him: “Please take a seat, I have ordered lunch for you, too. Help yourself, you do not want to upset me, do you?”. Mindovsky made excuses, however later he ate the whole meal and drank the wine. Before coffee, he stood up and said: “I will go to my cabin, I have something to fetch,” and so he left with his haversack.
